My First Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game game and I actually get to roll some dice

How very exciting, I actually got to meet up with a friend Otty on Tuesday, and play Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game (SBG) and I got to roll some dice   Otty invited round to his house so he could show me his amazing board, figures and teach me the rules......Finally.

So the Mission was Fords of Isen part 1, I was to be the evil side "Mwa-ha-ha-haaaa"!

I have to Kill Theodred and get 12 figures across the ford to win, Otty had to stop me and he had reinforcements on the way just had to hold on.

Ok first of all I've never played before and Otty has only played with his son, admittedly about a billion times and mistakes where made :)

Set up complete and the good go first, I set up with a couple of guys with in charge range of Theodred because he has to charge, and I could lure him into a trap - Erm that's not how it turned out.

The Trap was set he charged in and then I counter charged in and encircled him so he could not retreat, I even charged in with my General.

Shooting was ineffectual from the Rohan peasants and my Uruk scouts and Vrasku only manage to kill two archers.

Combat and disaster for me.

I lost the initiative and the combat, we all got pushed back and Theodred mortally wounded my general I have to use Might and Fate to keep him alive,

The next few turns I forgot to take photos, but I'll just say this Theodred is suppose to die or be mortally wounded in this scenery, but the Way Otty was rolling that was never going to happen.  Three turns of combat saw him kill my general and countless Uruks and Dunmen.  So I changed tactics I finally won the initiative and got to move first.  I couldn't kill Theodred in combat I'll shoot him to death, we did it to Boromir.  I moved one Dunman into combat with Theodred and moved everybody else to form a defensive line to stop his troops reaching him.   My plan was shoot into combat and kill Theodred, I could because I was Evil "Mwa-ha-ha-haaaa"!

I sent my Wargs in to slow down the Rohan advance.

Otty's rolling and aim was formidable, a spear killed my Warg and the archer peasant killed the Uruk.  How the peasants had stayed alive for so long was a complete mystery, all shooting up until this point was useless, then all came good for Otty, as he systematically whittled me down

Back to the Main event, as I said my plan was to put one lonely man in combat with Theodred and shoot him with everything I had.  I did manage to kill his horse and get him to spend all his Might and Fate points.  The two turns where I actually had the initiative I managed keep him in combat with one guy, who I would obviously shoot and kill by accident and just when I thought I had him I lost the initiative and he charged into the main fray and was lost. I lost my chance....

Things where not going well for me else where in the battle, after successfully crossing the first part of the river a freak wave hit with white horses on the tops came crashing down on my other Uruk scouts and killed all but 2 ( I rolled 4 1's... oh come on)

I also had a Warg that lost his rider which also perished in the water depths of Gandalf's magic

The sun was setting on the battlefield Otty's reinforcements hadn't turned up, but it was clear he would not need them.  I alone had killed 9 of my own men, three to shooting into combat and the 12 swim tests I had to make, I rolled six ones.  luck was not on my side.

To summarise, the game was great we had a great time with some excellent forging of the narratives and mini battles that went on in the Game.

My only bit of luck was I had two Wargs who would not die no matter who they faced.  Grimbald and his Rohan cronies charged and killed one Warg and he did it with a heroic charge which means if he wins the combat he and his cronies could charge and fight again, so he did and charged the second Warg that wouldn't die no matter how many people he faced and this time he was trapped, that was to be the last act of Grimbald as my heroic Warg the only one who actually was killing anyone won the combat again knocked them all back (as he charged a lonely Helmingas) and faced Grimbald and killed him.

Would should have I done differently?
1. not let Otty roll any dice, he won 90% of all roll offs which was mightily painful.
2. my tactics of shooting the hell out of Theodred did work I just needed a little luck and don't get my general involved in that fight or anybody else for that matter, Theodred is a monster in combat.
3. afterwards we learned that the Wargs can swim and don't need to take a swimming test. as long as they still have their riders (bugger I wish I knew that)
4. kill all peasants - because after turn 4 they magically turn into wood elves start dancing around and never miss and kill everything in sight
5. Uruks with bows cannot hit a barn door, even if the arrow was half stuck in the aforementioned barn door, so just charge them into combat.

KYTAN DAEMON ENGINE OF KHORNE part2

Welcome back to my Kytan Daemon Engine of Khorne, it has been 6 years since last I spoke of him and he has gone through some changes.  Lets start with a quick recap- When the Lord of Skulls model was released from Games Workshop I rashly bought one, then I came to realise I didn't like the model.  So I decided to use it and create two Chaos Lord of Wars, first would be a FW Shadowsword and the second would be an Iron Man style construct.  And that's what I did.

Then in 2006 FW released the Kytan Daemon Engine of Khorne and I did a post on it (click here to see it) and explained that now I had seen it, it made complete sense to give it hind legs and I was angry with myself for not thinking of it first.  Anyway,  it had taken 6 years to get over myself and a complete rebuild and now it is finally complete.

Because I was happy with the top half of the conversion I just had to do snap the top of my original version which was collecting dust.  I purchased some cheap Imperial Knight legs and the new Renegade Knight Feet on ebay, with a small amount of kit bashing I cut the legs apart and inserted a section to give them the hind legs look.  I rolled out tubing with green stuff using the Green stuff's Roll Maker

I got the airbrush out and set to work

I decided to do it section by section as I was using the NMM technique

Oh and I magnatised the legs section for ease of transport and in case I change my mind again regarding the legs ;)

And there we have it, I have to admit the conversion is better but I am still not 100% happy, but at least I have knocked it off my to do list :)  I just need to find a way to field it, may be Be'lakor would let me do it?

Please note I am 12 months behind on my blogs so this was actually made last year.  I have a lot to catch up on lol :)

Renegade knights Black Legion / Sons of Horus Conversion amendment.

Back in 2019 I converted an Imperial Knight into a Black Legion / Sons of Horus Renegade Knight it took me 18 months to revisit this build to create a close combat alternative and interchangeable weapon option, was the wait worth it?

Click link to see original post

My first renegade Knight conversion was my Khorne one with two daemonic sculpted claws and I wanted to revisit this still but extend the claws to a giant lightning claw style, where to start.  Luckily my son had started his Tyranid army and we had some spare giant scything talons and I also asked friends, Dwez and Otty if they could help, and they did.  You definitely need friends when it comes to conversions and never throw anything away ;)

I added plasticard to the sided of the bladed talons to give it a mechanical look rather than an organic look and converted the Imperial edging with green stuff and plasticard.  I added 8 spikes cut from spru and a chaos shield, and some guitar strings and hey presto there you go.

Indomitus - Painting Necrons Blackstone Fortress Style pt7 C'tan Shard of the Void Dragon

Welcome back to my Necron speed painting challenge, this week C'tan Shard of the Void Dragon.  When this model was leaked I was extremely pleased I was going to actually own a Necron Army,  His state line is good, his abilities are good and most of all he looks cool.  I did consider converting him, but I could bring my self to.  So I settled on altering his base to have him bursting out of the ground as if lying dormant for millennia and finally awakening with the wraith of a vengeful God. Enjoy

As you can see he has been painted in the exact same way as the Skorpekh Destroyers, you have got to keep the theme :)

Indomitus - Painting Necrons Blackstone Fortress Style pt6 Night Scythe "my way" - Cylon Raider

Welcome back to my Necron speed painting challenge, this week Night Scythe and confession time once again.  This is another model by GW that I love but hate, I love the shape of it and the idea, as a massive Battlestar Galactica fan 1978 and 2006 revamp, the night Scythe reminds me of the revamp Cylon Raider.  And just like BG I see Necron's as AI's placed in machines, so why would you need to place a pilot into a fighter, surely download a consciousness into the machine or construct - just le the Doom Stalker and such.  So the pilot had to go....

Just an army update - it is coming on nicely, I need ten more Necron warriors and the new flayed ones, then I'll be getting close to 2000pts

I bought / recycled a Night Scythe from Ebay for £25 and I had a spare Canoptek Reanimator I was never going to paint, time to kit bash.

My plan was to rip out the pilot, straighten the edges and place the spine from Canoptek Reanimator a quick simple conversion.  yes.... I know it is an extra expense but in my opinion it was worth every penny :)

As you can see he has been painted in the exact same way as the Skorpekh Destroyers, you have got to keep the theme :)

I have used the Necromunda base tiles for the main part of the base with added stuff from my spare bits box - kids never through anything away, you never know when it will come in handy (I'm sure my 40k hobby has made me into a hoarder) :)

I couldn't help my self, I'm a weak minded fool when it comes to the new shiny shiny :)
